What FDA authorization means
Before an e-cigarette can be legally marketed in the U.S., the company must apply to the FDA and receive a marketing order. Very few products have made it through. In the FDA’s own words, authorization “does not mean these products are safe, nor are they ‘FDA approved.'” The FDA keeps the current list on its authorized e-cigarettes page at fda.gov.

A “product” can be a device, a single pod flavor or a single nicotine strength, which is why one brand can have many entries.
Flavors on the list
For years, every authorized vape was tobacco or menthol. That changed when the FDA added Glas Gold and Sapphire pods, which trade reports describe as fruit-style flavors. Everything else on the list is still tobacco or menthol.
How to check a vape yourself
To check FDA-authorized vapes, match the exact brand, device and pod name against the FDA’s list, because authorization covers specific products, not whole brands. How many vapes are FDA-authorized?
The FDA lists 48 authorized e-cigarette products from Vuse, NJOY, JUUL, Logic and Glas.
Is FDA-authorized the same as FDA-approved?
No. The FDA says authorized products are not safe and are not “FDA approved.” They can be legally marketed to adults 21 and older.
Is JUUL FDA-authorized?
Yes. The JUUL device with tobacco and menthol pods was authorized in July 2025, and JUUL2 with two pods was authorized in August 2026.
Is Vuse FDA-authorized?
Yes. Vuse Alto, Solo, Vibe and Ciro products are on the list, all in tobacco flavors.
Are any fruit-flavored vapes FDA-authorized?
Yes. Glas Gold and Sapphire pods. Every other product on the list is tobacco or menthol.
Does authorization cover a whole brand?
